Statement
Pulling from a nostalgic landscape of pecan pies, grazing cattle, stock shows, and fishing trips, I transform images from my Southern childhood into multimedia memorabilia. My work longs to be a part of age-old Southern traditions such as quilting, farming, or craft making that have been practiced by my family for generations. Through a combination of reclaimed images and materials, old memories transform into ceramic animals or small paintings with homemade felted frames. Quilts made of old clothes are stitched together to hold carefully embroidered portraits of my family or to honor the song we all used to sing in the car when we took trips to the grocery store. Crocheted patches reference the homemade Christmas ornaments my mom’s Imi made that we still use every year. These works act as tools that I use to connect myself to my family’s history and allow me to create a space for myself within my Southern lineage.
